Leadership

Kay Kay: The Girl from Guangzhou

"My parents are very kind people. I am at the center of their circle. Materially they were not well off. But what  they've given me spiritually has no end. They gave me the power to run! They made me feel like I had a whole mountain behind me...pushing me to run. And I feel I wanted to run because of them."

I feel you Kay Kay.

ghet·to [get-oh]

It perturbs me when this word is used as an adjective.

Definition: Often Disparaging and Offensive. noting something that is considered to be unrefined, low-class, cheap, or inferior: Her furniture is so ghetto!

Its usage in that context is unproductive. "Ghetto" people are not inferior to us. We're better than this.

Anonymity

If suddenly you feel the need,
To post your date of birth,
Your name or address, school or work,
Remember what it's worth:
The internet's a crazy place,
And though most on this site,
Are pretty awesome on the whole,
There's some not so alright.
You might annoy a cannibal,
Who steals your kids to roast.
I'm sure there's only one or two...
But think before you post.

Knowing Yourself

I am
- a mellow, geeky, and a compassionate Chicano.
- enamored by creativity, perplexed by our contradictions.
- an advocate for equal rights and a proponent for change.
- a work in progress, now and forever.

I enjoy
- knowledge and the journey of discovery
- food, from any place or any culture.
- humor in any capacity
- my time with friends and family yet solitude has its virtues

Writing personal statements for grad school applications has driven me to post this. It's a list that I look forward to expanding.

MLK

"Make a career of humanity, commit yourself to the noble struggle for equal rights. You will make a greater person of yourself, a greater nation of your country, and a finer world to live in."

Today and every day from now:

I will be there for those that need me.

I will stand up for what is right.
I will do what needs to be done.
I will fight for what I want.
I will persevere, even when things get hard.
I will work even when I feel lazy.
I will do sport even when my body aches.
I will learn even when my mind feels numb.
I will meet people even when I’m scared.
I will speak when I need to speak.
I will work when I need to work.
I will be what I want to be.
Today I will be a man.

Alchemy & Life

The flow of this world follows laws so great, we can't even imagine them.
Learn that flow, decompose it, and reconstruct it.
That is the basis of alchemy and living.

Volunteer Work

Camped out in Boyle Heights. Little by little, drug addicts dropped by to exchange their syringes and to chat.

So much life gone to waste.

I'd like to do more than just HIV prevention.

Mink Oil **Warning** Video is disturbing

Discussion in the subreddit here  Reddit Link  about Mink Oil and how it was applied on some boots. Result was nice, well in my opinion it was but then a redditor posted this Video Here .

Do we ask ourselves enough about the products and services we purchase in our daily lives?

It's tough to watch but there has to be another way.

The Beauty of the Irrational

The Beauty of the Irrational from The African Attachment on Vimeo.

"Human beings don’t always make rational decisions. But making irrational decisions is precisely what makes us human. These decisions, based on an impulse or a feeling, often lead us to those perfect moments when it feels great to be alive."

Lion or a Gazelle. Doesn't matter. Wake up and run!

What time is it?

"We all live inside a clock, watching the gears move, but so few of us have any idea what time it is."
